Writing was developed in response to the increased prosperity of sumer and the increased need for direction and control. It grew from simple record keeping based on clay counters with pictograms. Cuneiform was then developed which used a combo of symbols scratched with a sharp piece of reed into a piece of clay. Mostly scribes used writing because there was hundreds of symbols to master and complex rules for using them.
