Sumer: Men, Women, and Civlization

In what ways were men and women different across social classes but also within the high-ranking classes?

What was meant with the word nin?

Who was Pu-abi?

Who was the only woman to rule a city-state?

What were some important technological innovations/inventions during this time?

  1. The women were not equal to the high-ranking men, but had command of lower-ranking men. The men were in charge of the business and trades, while women were in charge of innskeeping. The word nin means "lady." Pu-abi was the King of Ur's wife who was granted immortality by the gods. All of her servants killed themselves when she died so that they could continue serving her in the afterlife. Ur-Bau was the only woman to rule a city-state. The invention of the wheel, plow, metal working, and writing were all important inventions at this time.
